What Is Nakshatra (Birth Star)?

Nakshatra, also called janma nakshatra or birth star, is the lunar mansion occupied by the Moon at the exact time of your birth. There are 27 nakshatras in Vedic astrology, each spanning 13 degrees and 20 minutes of the zodiac. Your nakshatra determines your rashi (moon sign), influences your personality, and plays a crucial role in Hindu ceremonies, marriage compatibility (star matching), and naming traditions. Many Hindu families name their children based on the first syllable associated with their birth nakshatra.

How to Find Your Nakshatra

To accurately calculate your nakshatra, you need your exact date of birth, time of birth, and place of birth. The Moon moves through all 27 nakshatras in approximately 27.3 days, spending roughly one day in each nakshatra. Since the Moon can change nakshatras within a single day, the time of birth is critical for an accurate result. If you do not know your birth time, ask your parents or check your birth certificate.
